Tesla Model Y Car Tax UK
2026/27 VED Rates
Every Tesla Model Y pays the £10 first-year rate (zero-emission Band A). From year 2 the bill depends on the original UK list price. RWD variants below £50,000 pay the £200 standard rate; the Long Range AWD and Performance trims cross the £50,000 expensive-car supplement threshold and pay £640 per year for years 2 to 6.

Model Y trim breakdown
| Trim | UK list price | Year 1 | Year 2-6 | Year 7+ | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Model Y RWD | From around £44,990 | £10 | £200 | £200 | Under £50k EV threshold. No expensive car supplement. |
| Model Y Long Range AWD | From around £51,990 | £10 | £640 | £200 | Over £50k. £200 standard + £440 supplement for years 2-6. |
| Model Y Performance | From around £61,000 | £10 | £640 | £200 | Well above £50k. Full supplement years 2-6. |
Tesla list prices vary with currency and option packages. Use the original on-the-road list price as registered with DVLA, not the current market price. Verify your variant's P11D / list price on the Tesla UK configurator before applying the supplement test.
Why £640 and not £640 forever
The expensive car supplement (£440 in 2026/27) applies on top of the £200 standard rate only for years 2 through 6 of the vehicle's registered life. That is five years of supplement, then it drops away.
For a Model Y Long Range AWD registered on 1 May 2026:
- - Year 1 (May 2026 to April 2027): £10
- - Year 2 (May 2027 to April 2028): £640 (£200 + £440 supplement)
- - Year 3 to Year 6: £640 per year
- - Year 7 onwards (from May 2032): £200 per year (supplement drops off)
Six-year total VED bill for that Long Range: £10 + (5 x £640) = £3,210.
What changed from April 2026
Two changes matter for Model Y owners:
- EV expensive car supplement threshold raised from £40,000 to £50,000. This is a deliberate adjustment so most mainstream EVs (Tesla Model Y RWD, Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2, Hyundai Ioniq 5) escape the supplement. Long Range AWD and Performance still hit it.
- Standard rate raised from £195 to £200, supplement raised from £425 to £440. So the "over £50k EV" combined rate is now £640/year (up from £620 in 2025/26).
