What EVs Pay in 2026/27
Electric vehicles are no longer exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty. From April 2026, EVs pay £10 in year 1 and £200/year from year 2. The expensive car supplement threshold for EVs has been raised to £50,000.

Timeline of EV Tax Changes
Electric vehicles registered before this date pay £0 VED. They were placed in Band A (0 g/km) under the old system, which carried a £0 rate.
EVs were completely exempt. The new post-2017 system gave zero-emission vehicles a £0 first year rate and £0 standard rate. They paid nothing.
First year rate: £10. Standard rate from year 2: £190. Expensive car supplement: £425 for cars over £40,000. EV supplement threshold: £40,000.
First year rate: £10. Standard rate from year 2: £200. Expensive car supplement: £440 for cars over £50,000 (EV threshold raised from £40k to £50k).
